Terminator Genisys: Review
Written by Timothy Yip on June 30, 2015
“I’ll be back,” said the Terminator and he made sure that his return was noticed with more explosions, robot killing and a quest to alter the future by going back into the past in the 5th instalment of the Terminator franchise. Being chased by enemies that just doesn’t seem to die as they attempt to alter the future, the play on time sets the movie in an interesting timeline that will engage you from start to end.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is back again as The Terminator, but the image of his skull crushing, robot smashing and chaos inducing days have seem to taken a backseat as he is now the guardian of the heroic Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke), who – somewhat adorably – calls him “Pops”. But looks can be deceiving as he still packs a punch despite being older and friendlier, in his words: “I’m old, not obsolete”.
The movie starts with the leader of The Resistance, John Connor (Jason Clarke), who leads them in a successful battle against the robot empire, Skynet. As it collapses, a Terminator is sent back in time to kill his mother Sarah before she could give birth to John, in a bid to change the odds and wipe out the Resistance. John’s right hand man, Sergeant Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) is sent back to 1984 in a bid to prevent it. The rest as they say, is history (or is it the future since it’s time travel).
Considering how most of the Terminator movies have always been someone going back into time and shooting things, Terminator Genysis takes the franchise in a whole new direction by incorporating a warm fuzzy love story at the core of the plot. While your eyes will definitely be amazed by the mind blowing action and intense battles, your emotions will be riding shotgun as the protagonist unravel certain truths and make tough decisions.
Your mind gets gripped by the intense plot, your eyes can feast on the wonderful CGI and your heart will be taken for an emotional rollercoaster. Overall, it really does not get any better than this.
A huge thank you to United International Pictures (Singapore) for the passes to catch Terminator Genisys!
